Question:
I have been hearing a lot about the miracle low carb diet, such as the Atkins Diet. It seems to me not too long ago, the high carb, low fat diet was all the rage. Seemingly, the experts do not have a consensus on the best way to go about a weight loss plan. Perhaps it is time to stop listening to the diet experts, and instead listen to others who have first hand experience with dieting, such as bodybuilders. I purchased a book ten years ago called Body Flex, Body Magic by Anja Langer, a German bodybuilder who placed second in the Ms. Olympia contest in 1988. Now I know that bodybuilders use steroids and other drugs and supplements that give them the muscle mass they need for competition, but they do have to diet to remove the fat as there is no miracle drug for fat loss. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in what it takes to get into super shape with diet and exercise (minus the steroids). After ten years, and having read the book numerous times, I have decided to change my diet to a high carb, low fat diet, the type of diet that Anja recommends in her book. I know my diet choice goes against the current rage in the diet world, but incredibly, it has worked and I am down to the lowest weight I have been in my adult life, and I have muscles to boot! Of course I will never be an Anja Langer, but her advice in the book is down to earth and easy to follow. Basically, it is to follow a low calorie, high carb, low fat diet and to exercise, exercise, exercise. Anja recommends a diet break down of: 20-30% protein, 60% carbs and 10-20% fat I currently have a diet break down of: 13-15% protein, 75-85% carbs, and 4-7% fat Perhaps my carbs are too high and my fats are too low. I find it hard to up my protein and fats when I am restricted to a vegetarian diet. Any advice? Anyway, just thought I would recommend a book for anyone who is interested in not just losing weight, but getting into great shape in addition to the weight loss.
Answer:
> Anja recommends a diet break down of: > 20-30% protein, 60% carbs and 10-20% fat > I currently have a diet break down of: > 13-15% protein, 75-85% carbs, and 4-7% fat There's a big difference here between what she recommends and what you're doing. > Perhaps my carbs are too high and my fats are too low. I find it hard > to up my protein and fats when I am restricted to a vegetarian diet. > Any advice? Fats: Nuts, seeds, nut butters, olive oil, flax seed oil, other nut oils, avocados. Protein: whey, soy, cottage cheese, eggs, milk. Beans/grains to some degree but they don't compare all that well to the previous sources of protein in terms of value per volume.
