Question:
hi, i gather from reading a few postings from others i should introduce myself. i'm 36, diagnosed w/ type 2 a couple of months ago. i went in to the dr. because i thought i was experiencing kidney stones (had it happen once before), but urinalysis revealed no problem with kidneys, but lo-and-behold, sugar in the urine. subsequent BG tests revealed 265 and 253. dr. gave me 4mg Glucochron (sp?). but within the week i had changed my diet significantly and began exercising (walking 3 - 4 times a week) and by the second week i kept going hypoglycemic. finally conviced the doc that i probably didn't need the meds. and now i find i can regulate my BG levels much better just with the diet and exercise. well, that's all for now, but you'll be hearing much more from me very soon! i could really use the support and i'm thankful for the help
Answer:
The weight loss was not with some fad type dieting, believe me. I had been visiting my parents from Feb 9 thru April 26, during which time I was eating what my mother was cooking. She has been cooking a low-fat, heart healthy diet for my father since his quad bypass 8 years ago, but it was a significant change from the types of things I had been eating for quite some time. The weight loss began sometime in Feb. and continues still as I have learned how to eat properly. And now it is more like the 1-2 lbs. per week like you said. What I plan is to be eating this way for the rest of my life. I am trying to follow Elizabeth Hiser's diet plan, which recommends about 1500 calories per day and a mostly Mediterranean diet. It seems to be working, and I don't feel starved or like I am 'missing' something. If I could cut back on some of the medications at some point in the future that would be good. All the meds I take are terribly expensive. At any rate, I am learning a lot from reading the posts here. Thanks for all the help. Perhaps someday I can be helpful to someone else.
