Question:
I have been on the South Beach diet com for a couple of months. From reading the book, I can not figure out how many carbs I am allowed in a day. does anyone know the amounts of carbs that are allowed per day during each phase of south beach diet com?
Answer:
The South Beach Diet is not quantitative about carb counts the way, say, Atkins is. There is no target number of carbs per day. The point of South Beach is just to eliminate high glycemic index foods and break the craving cycle. South Beach (once you pass through the initial two weeks) allows a variety of very carby foods that an Atkins follower might shun - such as whole grain breads or whole wheat pasta or sweet potatoes - but suggests that you limit your use of them to one or two servings a day. Following South Beach-ish principles I have been averaging about 40-50 g net carbs a day for the month I have been eating low-carb. But I have been reluctant to add the relatively carby yet South Beach permitted items back into my diet, because I am afraid of binging. So I think that one could follow the principles of South Beach and yet still stay below 100 g net carbs a day, a very low-carb diet by most standards. One more thing you might have noticed about the South Beach book is that the lists of Foods to Enjoy is very rudimentary and incomplete. If you peruse the recipes and meal plans for a particular phase you will notice many foods that are permitted but not listed on the Foods to Enjoy list. This will give you additional ideas for things to enjoy.
