Has anyone tried the south beach diet program and if so, how has it worked for you?

Tagged As: south beach diet program

Question:
I am considering the South Beach Diet program. Has anyone on this list tried the program and if so, how has it worked for you? Has the weight loss been successfull? What about the claims of a loss of 8-13 lbs in the first 2 weeks? I have read material that suggests this initial loss is mainly fluid loss and that it can be easily regained if the program is stopped. I'd like to get a little input about the program before I purchase the book. thanks

Answer:
That claim is true of any diet that greatly restricts carbs. Fat loss occurs after this point and is due mainly to decreased appetite brought about by the absense of blood sugar swings (which result from restricted carbs or low GI carbs). I see no reason why it won't work. However, I do think that counting calories would be a good idea to avoid hit-n-miss weight loss. Just imo.

It works!! It is incredibly strict and most people have a hard time sticking to the rules, but if you do you can become as thin as you want. My dad did the diet and played by the rules and he looks like a stick figure now. I think he is too thin, but he's incredibly healthy and fit (esp at the age of 62). He is still on the diet 2 years later, and now is able to eat a much greater variety of foods than he was able to for the first 6 months or so. If you do what they tell you and don't cheat, you can lose as much weight as you want. He said the hardest part for him starting out was not being able to eat bread. It didn't take too long to get over this, the body WILL adjust to your diet and you will eventually stop craving the foods you want. We have many more addictions than we are aware of. Food is a big one, sugars (carbs) are the most addicting, and most people aren't aware that we actually have withdrawl from many different foods, causing us to feel lousy. We don't attribute it to the foods though, we usually think it's a "stomache bug" or "stress headache" etc. I need to lose weight but don't have the discipline to do the South Beach diet. If you think you can do it, then don't hesitate, I guarantee it will work (if you follow the rules).
