Question:
I just purchased the South Beach diet book with sample menu . Would appreciate any input regarding Atkins and SBD. I have noticed that SBD is more low fat but other than that have not noticed any other difference, but I just started the book. Thank you for your help!
Answer:
what i get from southbeach is that it's not about cutting carbs across the board. it's about learning which carbs make your blood sugar spike and which ones don't. so you don't count carbs outright, you think about the glycemic index of the foods you eat, and cut out foods that have a high glycemic index. of course, those foods are mostly refined sugars and grains. whole grain foods are ok, as are whole fruits (and other natural, complex sugars). looking at the menu, of course, they seem like two very similar ways of eating. here's a sample of my daily menu (on southbeach): breakfast one slice of 18 grain, sprouted wheat, or sprouted flax toast, with peanut butter and no sugar added fruit spread. a glass of fat free milk or a container of fat free yogurt lunch large salad of spinach, several veggies (no carrots or corn), and chicken, turkey, egg or other protein source. snack: apple or a handful of mixed nuts dinner fish or chicken breast and a couple kinds of veggie, with half a cup of brown/wild rice mix. a glass of wine desert: sugar free chocolate pudding or fat free, no sugar added fruit yogurt. and it's working really well for me. in addition to losing 40 pounds (so far), i've pretty much eliminated my IBS symptoms, my constant food cravings are gone, and i only need one cup of coffee to make it through the day
