Is south beach diet just a softer version of atkins diet ?

Tagged As: south beach vs atkins diet

Question:
Have any of you heard of or tried the South Beach Diet? I know many people lately who are on that and say it's LC but a softer version of atkins diet? I don't know that much about it personally. Just curious, if you do? please

Answer:
I recently posted a long post about South Beach, which I've been on for about 2 months. My husband is on Atkins, and I have read both books. They each have an induction phase of 2 weeks, where carbs are strictly limited. Then they change. SB allows high fiber carbs (stressing low GI) -oatmeal, whole grain breads, whole wheat pasta, but not in unlimited amounts. They also stress good (mono and poly-unsaturated) fats. If you eat dairy products , they recommend low fat (they do allow milk.) If you eat meat, they recommend lean cuts of beef and pork , skinless chicken breast, etc. I could not do Atkins, I have no problem on South Beach, and enjoy the food. I have lost 8 pounds - and when I stepped on the scale yesterday I noticed I actually went below my target weight. Which made me realize my target was probably a couple of pounds too high ;-). As for skim milk vs. cream. I drink skim milk all the time, would miss it tremendously, whereas I almost never have cream.
