www IBS and autoimmunity, any connection?

Tagged As: Www Ibs

Question:
I have heard that there is an autoimmune component to IBS. I've never seen literature supporting this. Can you or anyone site some studies verifying the autoimmune issue?

Answer:
IBS is a learned response of the subconscious mind.  You will find that most so called autoimmune problems are really a function of the subconscious mind. Would you like to tell that to my non-functioning pancreas and thyroid? If your pancreas or your thyroid are truly no-functioning then you don't have IBS.  You have some non-functioning body parts. With IBS the symptoms can't be traced to something that is truly non-functioning. You have a diagnosable illness.  IBS is when there is no other diagnose. No, I was responding to your comment that most so called autoimmune problems are really a function of the subconscious mind. Both type 1 diabetes and hasimoto's disease are usually considered to be autoimmune problems.  Do you consider them to be a function of the subconscious mind? And I have IBS... I am sorry but an autoimmune problem is when a persons immune system attacks itself.  Diabetes has nothing to do with the immune system. I never heard of hasimoto's so I can't comment on it. I stand by my comment. And my pancreas and kidneys? What function of my subconscious mind is causing effacement of the epithelial foot-cell process? Never heard of Hashimoto's thyroiditis? I'm not any sort of medical professional and *I've* heard of it. Your medical knowledge is extremely limited. It is hard to take your claims seriously when you are wrong about so many things. Do a little research on diabetes - a common disease - a get back to us, hotshot. Well this has been an interesting thread. No scientific evidence of a relationship between IBS and autoimmunity has been offered, therefore I assume there is no relationship. IBS is a disease of the gut's enterochromafin cells and their respective 5HT4 receptors. The distribution of serotonin in the gut is 95% and in the brain is 5%. This is why we see anxiety, panic and depression as part of the IBS. I have tried a 5HT3 receptor agonist with a little success for my IBS, the drug is Remeron. The benefit did not last. Now I am trying a new 5HT4 receptor agonist called Zelnorm. It is too early to evaluate but so far the results are very favorable with less pain, bloating and constipation. While the drug is intended for use by women, male patients are finding success with Zelnorm, made by Novartis Pharm. Since KMottus first mentioned the autoimmune relationship to IBS, I am disappointed that he has not contributed to this discussion. Thatıs because there is no such evidence. Actually, no, IBS is a set of symptoms. In many cases, there is a pathophysiology that is associated with serotonin, but itıs not with the enterochromafin cells (or 5HT4 receptors) per se but it runs along the whole brain-gut axis. Actually, this is not quite correct either. To get more scientific clarity on IBS go to www.zelnorm.com and register for medscape, it's free. At that site you can get patient and physician information. It is a good resource for anyone seeking a scientific approach to IBS. Maybe the replies to this didn't go to USENET I posted I though both on this thread and on the other thread started that put these words in my mouth (THAT I NEVER MEANT AND NEVER BELIEVED OR THOUGHT OR IMAGINED) ONCE AGAIN...WITH FEELING!!!!!! It is NOT associated. READ WHAT I WROTE IBD is NOT IBS. Quit saying I am making a connection. I AM NOT!! IBS IS NOT ASSOCICATED WITH AUTOIMMUNITY Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD ARE ALL AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES, IBD not IBS TWO DIFFERENT DISEASES...NOT THE SAME THING AT ALL!! Did I make myself CLEAR THIS TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS the posts where I replied to this.
