Question:
I am 32 years old and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in December 1998. I was also diagnosed in early June 1998 as suffering from depression brought on by a lot of personal problems. I was 125 lbs. in June and began gaining weight.I consulted my physician weight loss diet in August after gaining 40 lbs. and he told me he didn't know why I was gaining weight. That was his answer. I switched physicians in November (by this time I had gained almost 80 lbs.). My new doctor suspected hypothyroidism. She ordered an ultrasound of my thyroid and discovered an enlargement. I was referred to an endocrinologist in December, who told me there was nothing wrong with me. My doctor went against the specialist's diagnosis and began treating me with Synthroid in January. My TSH level in January was 14.75 (normal is between .32 and 5). I have my blood tested every three weeks and increased in medication dosage is made. Since I started gaining weight, I have gained almost 100 lbs. Can anyone offer me any words of encouragement or give me any advise? I'd really appreciate it.

Answer:
I don't know if I can be terribly encouraging but you are not alone with this problem. I am 32 also and gained about 40 lbs in 2 & 1/2 months last year. I've had trouble losing weight ever since I had kids 7 years ago. Coincedentaly, that is when my endo believes that I became hypo. (I had twins that where 7lbs 12oz and 7lbs 14oz) She gave the big speech on how, during pregnancy, the baby/ies rob your body of hormones. Thyroid hormones being just one of them. I was diagnosed when I was 29. (2years after 3rd child) I ws put on 50 mcg Synthroid. I lost back a few lbs. Then suddenly, last year, I gained 40lbs in a little over 2 months. Go back to doc and TSH is sky high. My dose was upped from 50 to 150mcg by Feb. 1999. Now Cytomel is added to the mix. I also have PCOS and take Metformin for that. Met is supposed to have weight loss as a sid effect. Since I have been on it I have lost 11lbs. I seem to be stuck now. I have also been low-carbing a little. I don't know if the thyroid meds or met has helped because I started taking them at the same time (Cytomel and met) I still need to lose about 30 lbs to be at a normal weight. I COMPLETELY understand how you feel. It is especially hard when the weight just seems to come out of nowhere. Like you, I hadn't changed my eating or exercise habits. I was jogging 3 miles about 3-4 times per week. I had to stop because I got so heavy that I would get shin splints when I jogged. I'm just starting back to the gym and I only walk and do the stair master. ANything that won't put stress on the shins. No pounding. I also got the goofy responses form docs. eat less exercise As if it is entirely normal to gain so much weight in such a short period of time. Lots of people here do low carb eating and it seems to help alot of people. There are books like THe Zone, Atkins and Sugar Busters ( I have this one) Give one of those a try and see what happens. Sorry about what has happend to you but I know what your going through and it is frustrating. Good luck.
