Rapid weight loss, rapid weight regain?

Tagged As: rapid weight loss diet

Question:
Is there anything specific about rapid weight loss that makes it more likely that the weight will come back when you discontinue the diet *besides* your post diet eating habits? To rephrase, if two people lose 100 pounds, one on an OPTIFAST type program and the other on a moderate diet 200 calories below maintenance and both go on the same maintenance program after the weight loss, will the OPTIFAST person still gain weight back faster then the moderate diet person?

Answer:
I'd hazard the guess that the OPTIFAST person would indeed regain more quickly than the 200 calories below maintenance dieter, primarily due to the greater loss of muscle mass involved in the OPTIFAST dieter's weight loss. Muscle tissue is light years more metabolically active than its adipose counterpart, leaving the OPTIFAST dieter at a post-diet disadvantage.
