Question:
I have heard it said that there are some types of food to avoid.  There are times when I feel quite uncomfortable and other times less so and I wonder if certain types of food are responsible.  My Dr. didn't mention anything about it (and like a prize idiot I forgot to ask!). Last night was a case in point.  I was given a bowl of strawberries & cream in the evening.  When I woke up this morning I felt really terrible, almost too bad to go to work.  I wondered if there was any connection with the strawberries or just a coincidence.  I think I've heard one should avoid acidy foods - I guess strawberries would count.

Answer:
While there are some lists of foods for people with IBS are sometimes recommended to avoid (lactose containing foods, anything that's usually associated with gas like beans) I think it is safe to say that there is no specific food that is a universal trigger we should all avoid, and no foods that are universally safe.  AND there are a number of people for whom food is not a trigger at all. Best and easiest bet is to start keeping a food diary, write down everything you eat, and when you have what symptoms. After awhile certain patterns may emerge.  Try several weeks avoiding anything you think triggers it, and then try adding it back. Note:  it may be an ingredient in the food, we discovered my ex was only negatively effected by cheap generic Mac and Cheese, but not Kraft.  The only difference in the ingredients was yellow food dye (Kraft being all natural uses a spice to make it yellow).
