Question:
I have suffered from IBS for as long as I can remember, initially it used to involve diarrhea and going to the loo about 4 or 5 times a day every day. Over the last 12 months or so, this has turned to constipation. Sometimes it can be four days or so and I can't go. I was managing the problem with Laxatives; however, these now seem to have stopped working I have been taking them so often. I feel really lethargic, have put loads of weight on and feel generally fat, bunged up and horrible! Does anyone have any suggestions how I can help to ease the constipation? I wanted to try natural remedies, but wasn't sure what to try, I'd heard Aloe Vera was good but cannot find any proof about it helping with Constipation.
Answer:
The ethnic foodstuff I am recommending below is really not good for me which is why I rarely eat them. They aggravate my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome problems. But once in a long while I will feel the urge and go for them. I find them delicious and they are really good for making a good load of nice soft stool that cleans out the gut of whatever had been building up for weeks. Try the canned curries from a Chinese grocery shop. Yeo Hiap Seng is a manufacturer from Singapore and their curries are mild. Just add boiled potatoes and eat with warmed curry. If you like add sliced meat and onions. I think it is the coconut milk and perhaps the spice that creates the stools. Else if you have an ethnic Indian restaurant or one from SE Asia like Indonesian cuisine in your town go and try their stuff. My pet theory. The spice causes the GI tract irritation and it thinks it is being invaded by hostile bacteria. So it excretes all manner of HCl, mucus and enzymes to overcome this invasion. Thus the big load of stool that is well mixed with mucus. Another entirely different food you can try is Tofu. CaSO4 is used to set the soy milk into semi solid Tofu. The CaSO4 is indigestible powdered solid but it sure cleans out your gut. Be careful with this for the same indigestibility may aggravate your constipation. I avoid Tofu because it causes oral cavity and throat irritation plus some more symptoms I don't have the words to describe accurately. One benign home remedy I have is to boil gourds in bone stock soup. The boiled sliced gourd is like a thick wad of soggy cellulose pulp and actually tastes good because the bone stock has seeped into the pulp. This stuff gives bulk and fiber without the calories. Cleans the gut.
