Study links intestinal bacteria to irritable bowel syndrome

Question:
Has anyone been prescribed antibiotics for IBS?

Answer:
I haven't, but I know that taking acidophilus (friendly bacteria) supplements helps me. When I recently stopped taking acidophilus for 3 days, I started having IBS-D symptoms. When I resumed, the symptoms went away. I would certainly recommend taking acidophilus whenever anyone is on antibiotics, since they kill essential good bacteria as well as bad bacteria. Studies are really a bit preliminary for that. FWIW for every person who swears antibiotics helps their IBS there is someone whose IBS is made MUCH MUCH worse by antibiotics. Then there is the growing problem of antibiotic resistant bacteria, so it is wise to be very sure you have a problem that antibiotics will help before taking them. Otherwise in a few years all the bugs will be resistant to them and people will suffer and die from infections that should be treatable. Initially my IBS was diagnosed as a parasite picked up in Mexico.... the parasite was never found in the stool tests I did and the antibiotics didn't make me feel better or feel worse. My IBS didn't start up right after a bout of antibiotics, nor did antibiotics make it go away. I don't think my IBS is antibiotic or bacteria related..... but that's just me.
