Medicine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Question:
My doctor briefly mentioned to me a NEW medicine for the treatment of IBS??? Has anyone heard of this? What is it called?

Answer:
Probably Lotronex.  Check prevous threads, but briefly: I started using it in conjunction with Questran.  I have been virtually symptom free for three months - It is only approved for use by women (insufficient male sample in the trials.) Therefore, insurance won't pay for it, so I'm paying $145  a month for it. I just started a new medication called Lotronex. My doctor prescribed it the very day it was available which was about 6 weeks ago. From what I read about it, it is more effective in women, but has also shown to work for men. I don’t know if this is what you are looking for, but you should ask your Dr. about it. It wouldn't hurt. I have been doing much better on this medication and there are very few side-effects, other than headache which meant away after a couple of weeks. The nurse at my Dr.'s office said that many of the patients that have started it have come to their follow-up visit with no symptoms of their Crohn’s disease. My doctor offered it to me?? Didn't mention the thing...Your not a woman are you? No. The only reason it is not *approved* for men is that there weren't enough men in the trials to statistically justify its approval. My doctor has now prescribed it to several male patients, and all report good results.  The hang up is with the insurance coverage.  Since it's not approved for males, my HMO won't pay for it, hence my paying $145 a month out of pocket,
