Question:
I am looking for information about feline irritable bowel syndrome. I believe this is what my cat has. What is the proper treatment?
Answer:
I have one with a very mild case. Apart from the initial 5-6 weeks after diagnosis, when he was on all sorts of things, including anti-emetics, he is treated by diet alone. Fundamentally, no red meat. He's very lucky that he doesn't need to be on steroids and has only ever had to go back on anti-emetics a couple of times (for about a week at a time) since he was diagnosed 5 years ago. I'm not a vet, but lymphoma was the differential diagnosis when they were trying to sort out what was wrong with him. Basically the approach was: treat him for IBD, if he doesn't respond quickly, then proceed to tests for lymphoma. Thankfully, he responded quickly and now, along with having FLUTD, has a happy, if gastronomically extremely limited, life. I've got a cat who is currently being treated and is on prednisone, special foods, metronidazole, pepcid AC, and lots of loving attention. Not to mention $$ spent.
