Diet and Health FAQ

Irritable bowel syndrome and intestinal flora.

Tagged As: Irritable Bowel Syndrome Cause Symptom

Question:
I have had IBS for about one year. Occasionally I have to take penicillin cover for a prolapsed mitral valve, and I wonder if this has killed off all my gut bacteria. Would this be the cause of IBS? If so, can I buy more bugs to restore everything to normal?

Answer:
Unlikely. IBS is a function bowel disorder, meaning that the bowel has no disease present and performs its primary functions properly, but it hurts like hell for no explainable reason. Antibiotic use can aggravate IBS symptoms, and eating yogurt and/or taking probiotics can be useful to those with or without IBS while taking antibiotics, but it is not very likely that occasional use of antibiotics would cause symptoms long after their use was discontinued. Some with IBS find yogurt and/or probiotics helpful, while some do not, but in most cases it is not harmful to try either/both. This, of course, is not medical advice. Your doctor can best answer what's going on with you; my answer deals only with generalities. You can buy at a good pharmacy ~ Try Solgar 40 Plus brand, or any of the Solgar options. Ask your doctor for Bentyl. Or check out here to buy online ... http://www.solgar.co.uk/modules/shop/view.asp?catid=14&Prodcode=E27
