Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Hypoglycemia

Tagged As: Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diarrhea

Question:
I have a quick question, hope I'm posting this in the correct forum. I am suffering from both hypoglycemia and IBS.  Both seem to be pretty severe. I am on a high protein diet (although I do eat whole grains and brown rice sometimes, so I'm not as extreme as Atkins) for my hypoglycemia. Will this diet help the irritable bowel syndrome too, or will it hurt it? I was seeing a nutritionist but my insurance stopped covering that, otherwise I'd ask him.

Answer:
There are at least 3 general categories of IBS - diarrhea predominant, alternating constipation and diarrhea and constipation dominant. Diet may help all but diet therapy is based on the nature of the problem. I'm not aware of any connection between IBS and hypoglycemia. Most IBS support groups, well, I've never seen a tie in either. I suffer from IBS also and have done so since puberty. A low residue diet, such as the Greenwich diet, and avoidance of really high hard fiber veggies such as broccoli and related veggies, and any RAW veggies, really seems to help. Try avoiding all wheat products for awhile and see if that helps. Especially the whole fiber grains...at least the bleached ones are semi-stripped of gluten and intestinal damaging hard fiber dairy may likely be a factor also. Yes, Lactose intolerance can mimic IBS; and soluble fiber sources are usually better tolerated. About 3.5 yrs ago I changed my diet to a low-carb approach similar to the zone diet. Prior to it I suffered with some IBS. Since the change, I've had very few problems with IBS. I think the original IBS may have been caused by or related to one or more of the following: 1) Too much wheat and wheat derivatives in the diet 2) Not enough liquids, I now drink the necessary amount of H2O 3) Not enough fats (good fats) in the diet I think we under-estimate these factors and their effects on our digestive system. Take a look at the d'adamo blood type diet. If you are a blood type O it may fit very closely to what you are doing now and help you fine tune your low carb diet even further. www.dadamo.com
