Irritable Bowel Syndrome...but wont eat the vets recommended foods..

Tagged As: Irritable Bowel Syndrome In Dog

Question:
I've got a bit of a problem with a Shar-Pei, specifically Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The dog was a rescue dog, and was in terrible shape when he was picked up lots of things wrong but most importantly a very bad case of Gardia (sp?) he was an adult and weighed 41 lbs...anyway it is now five years later and he has been fine and healthy since we got all the bugs out (literally). But over the last few months he has had problems, a lot of diarrhea and blood in his stool…the vet did the whole batch of tests and says that he has Irritable Bowel Syndrome brought on by the damage done by the Gardia... But he won’t touch any of the special foods that the vet has recommended…(if he is offered nothing else at all he is eating grass in the yard by late day two).I'm hoping that someone might know of something we can add to the special food to make him eat it (something that wont cause the problems we're trying to remedy)...either that or if there is some sort of non irritating food that we could get or make for him…hell if we could fix this by feeding only ground fillet then that is what he would get).

Answer:
IBS is usually CAUSED BY STRESS. Yeah. That can be a bear.  Good. Probably so. We could have addressed THAT without the vet tests, and if behavioral techniques don't work in a few days then we'd KNOW the dog NEEDS the vet. Brought on by the damage done by the Gardia…That's UNLIKELY. Food ain't got NUTHIN to do with this. FORGET DIET. Feed fresh prepared foods like you'll find in Breakfast at The Puppy Wizard's and follow the information below PRECISELY and ASK The Amazing Puppy Wizard if you need any additional FREE help. Things are beginning to get much worse day by day and the vets seem unable to help. http://www.oofus.com/pix/PoorRufusMed.WMV http://www.oofus.com/pix/PoorRufusSmall.WMV Do NOT allow this dog to eat grass.  Grass contains silicon - what glass is made of - and will do a dandy job of slicing up your pup's digestive system and making it much worse. Have you tried the basic bland diet - two-thirds boiled white rice and one-third skimmed boiled hamburger or skimmed ground turkey?

We also have a dog with IBS-the vet gave us flagyl (antibiotic) to take 1/2 pill every other day and when there is a flare up - to give whole pill daily then reduce - also small quant. of rice and chicken, frequently throughout the day til bowels are without mucous and blood. The Vet also recommended "Prescription ID" by Hills. This got Daisy over her initial bout and several thereafter. HOWEVER, I am not comfortable with giving the flagyl for the rest of her life. When this dog food scare came up, I made the decision to home cook her food. I did a lot of research - Buy the book "The Nature of Animal Healing" by Martin Goldstein, DVM. It really is an eye-opener. This is Holistic vet. medicine - unbelievable! I have been feeding Daisy 1/4 combo of cooked chicken and ground turkey - 2/4 white rice - 1/4 carrots - small pieces of garlic clove and 1/2 of a vitamin "Pet-Tabs Plus" (Pfizer) I make sure this is slightly warmed. She loves it. No problems so far with her bowels at all - I intend to take her off of flagyl and try something called "Rescue Remedy" that was mentioned in the book. This should have a calming effect on her and thus help the IBS condition. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
