Question:
Have there been documented cases of internal bleeding (however slight) caused by simple irritable bowel syndrome or spastic colon? Or is internal bleeding (say occult bleeding in stools) always a sign of some other disorder?
Answer:
Blood in the stool is a sign of pathology in the GI tract. It warrants investigation to determine the cause. Irritable bowel syndrome should not cause a break in the mucosa of the colon. While blood in the stool is a sign of pathology, it is within the spectrum of signs and symptoms that are seen in IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). A workup should be done, of course, but when studies come up negative and when the history is compatible with IBS, the bleeding can be attributed to IBS.
