Question:
Has anybody had any experience with the lo-carb lifestyle and irritable bowel syndrome? My wife has a severe case and still won't give up the lo-fat/lo-calorie yo-yo. The poor kid has been in the emergency room four times, to her doctors' office twice and admitted to the hospital twice in the last two weeks to control the symptoms.
Answer:
I had bad IBS for a long time, but since I am on low carb it is nearly gone. Tell her to stick with it, till things calm down. Another thing; I got a product in the health food store that really helped me better than anything else. It is called Intestinal Bowel Soother, and it is an herbal blend in capsules. It comes in a blue bottle. Also she should get a product made by the makers of Imodium called Probiotica. I found those two products helped me the best, even better than the prescription stuff. Here is a study out of my research database that might be of some help. The title is Fructose Intolerance: An Unrecognized Problem. It is from the University of Iowa Medical Center and The American Journal of Gastroenterology. Researchers studied the effects of fructose (a simple, natural sugar found in fruits, juices, honey and candy) on 219 people who had unexplained gas pain and bloating. They noted that a whopping 78% of the people who drank a fructose-water mixture had improper digestion of fructose as evidenced by production of hydrogen and methane gases (these gases are not produced with normal fructose digestion). Nearly 60% of the study subjects demonstrated symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) after drinking the mixture. The researchers stated they were surprised at such a strong association between fructose and digestive distress and recommended that IBS sufferers be screened for fructose intolerance. If that is a cause treatment is a pain, but effective. Many people are 'diagnosed' with IBS because of the symptoms and are never tested for the bugs. Well worth checking out. LC seems to help either way, but I would prefer getting rid of freeloaders. Yup. IBS is one of the conditions that *completely* went away for me within a few weeks of low-carbing.
