Problems with bowel motility

Tagged As: Bowel Motility

Question:
Every time I try and exercise I get a flare-up. No matter what type of exercise or how long of a session I make it, I always end up on the toilet. I have problems with bowel motility. I recently (3 weeks ago) tried walking. Went out two days in a row for about a 45 min. walk, not fast, but a normal paced walk. The third day I was tired and by the fourth day I was bleeding! AHHHHHH!! Talk about frustrating! I'm 26 and would like to keep myself energized as well as not looking like the couch potato we with CD sometimes end up being. I'm not over weight, but I also think it is good for my husband and I to set a good example for our kids by exercising. Any one else have these types of situations?

Answer:
I suggest you to keep trying, something may work. I'm male, late 40s with CD, my top three CD symptoms are: fatigue, joint pain and diarrhea. Back in 2004 my health improved enough that for a few months I was exercising 6 days out of 7.  I did a mix of aerobic, strength training and bone loading (for osteoporosis). I had bowel problems from any energetic exercise - the action helped the bowel motility.  I often had to interrupt my exercise to use the bathroom.  Within the first two months things improved and I usually got through my exercise without needing a break. The other exercises, while making my joint pain worse, only caused diarrhea if my exercise included squatting a lot.  Like the aerobic, things improved after one or two months. I can't really say that exercise made my disease flare up, it did exacerbate my symptoms at times. Have you tried something gentle like yoga or Tai Chi?  Something like that may help build up your body's tolerance to exercise.  Has your doctors been of any help with this? I think the effect of exercise depends on how bad your crohn’s is. I have found that when I'm feeling a little bit seedy if I go for a light run I feel better. Ab exercises would cause a blockage at times but not at the moment. There is probably a direct link between movement and irritation to the bad part of your bowel.
