twins pregnancy ?

Tagged As: Twins Pregnant

Question:
does anyone know how you could get pregnant with twins? do you need to use some kind of fertility drug to get twins pregnancy?

Answer:
To have fraternal (non-identical) twins, you need to ovulate twice or more, ie releasing two or more eggs in one cycle. This often happens naturally and is more common in older women and those with polycystic ovaries and/or with a family history of multiple births - as the factors involved with multiple ovulation are partly genetic. Some fertility drugs can make you have multiple ovulations too, eg Pergonal. However, no doctor would be likely to prescribe these drugs just because a mother wanted to increase her chances of a multiple birth, for two reasons. 1. Multiple pregnancies are more risky for mother and babies, and 2. Fertility drugs which stimulate your ovaries are associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer in later life. MOst people who have them will be fine, but, for example, there is a significant association between taking more than 10 or so doses of Clomid and ovarian cancer. Identical twins are caused by one fertilized zygote splitting into two (or more) in the early stages of development, and is generally thought to be a random occurrence which is not affected by family history or fertility drugs. For more info about twins generally see www.tamba.org.uk For information on twin birth, see the Association of Radical Midwives' archive page www.radmid.demon.co.uk/twinbirth.htm
