Medicine when pregnant ?

Tagged As: Pregnant Medicine

Question:
I'm sitting here panicking myself silly - I think I may have gotten pregnant last month - I'm really nauseous right now (which would be 7 wks as of last month) , and if I'd gotten pregnant his month (i.e. now = 3 wks) it's too early for that. The problem is that I took the following medicine for the last two to three weeks (i.e. week 5-7 or wk 0-3): naproxen - 1000 mg/day sulfasalazine (not quitte sure how much - 4 tablets a day) ambien 10 mg or 5 mg each night 1-2 capsules lentogesic (I think it's dextropropoxyphene) a day for pain. All of them are class B for pregnancy. I think they are not a problem in the first two weeks of pregnancy, but how much of a problem are they from week 3 onwards?

Answer:
I have no idea about the other meds...but I am on 10mg Abien as prescribed by my OB and he said that it is fine. Class B means that there is no evidence of harm to the baby in either animal tests or human experience, though there have been no controlled studies in human. I wouldn't fret about this at all. (Though NSAIADS, like naproxin, should not be taken in late pregnancy, and, now that you suspect that you are pregnant, it would be wise to avoid meds as much of possible, and check with your doctor/midwife before taking anything.) If they are class B then you should be fine. Most of my meds are class C (asthma) and I am not worried. Just talk to your doctor and let him/her know. You will want to go for an early prenatal visit so they can regulate your meds to pregnancy.
