Question:
Well, in the interest of science and curiosity today, I tasted my milk. I was not able to express much in the shower at all; my right breast just gave a few little drops and the left, only two jets (both nipples are pierced though so not all of the ducts work at the front - some comes out of the piercings). Sure enough, this weaning milk was salty and not sweet like it used to be when Killy was a baby. I'd heard about this happening and now I know it's true. :) He hasn't nursed for a couple of days now, though he has asked a few times, but I think he signs nurse for thirsty and he seems just as happy with a cup. Anyway, yup, weaning milk happens. I suppose it could be the pregnancy too, but who knows?
Answer:
I nursed into this pregnancy, but my son self-weaned when I was about 3 1/2 months pregnant. (I'm now 5 months). I didn't taste the milk, but I know that the quantity had dropped off... and he had shown no interest in weaning prior to this point. It was rather sudden...one day he just stopped asking to nurse...and seemed content with a cup. (I don't think it hurt that it was around the holidays and he was often offered milk mixed with non-alcoholic eggnog, which is very sweet tasting) How old's your son, out of interest? Mine's a bit younger than Meghan's Killian; he'll be 16 months tomorrow, and still bfing about 4-5 times a day plus 2 or 3 at night. My Hunter weaned when he was 20 months and I was 5 months pregnant. He was nursing like a mad man up until then and weaning happened in about 2 weeks from start to finish. I did encourage it and had a rather ugly failed weaning attempt when he was 17-18 months or so. My milk dried up at about 5 months. I gave him a sippy of chocolate milk to help with the transition. Worked OK but he still is a bit persistent with the whole chocolate milk thing. He's OK if we don't have any in the house but if it is here, he is gett'n it, Lol.
