Pregnancy changes in behavior ?

Tagged As: Pregnant Changes

Question:
My laid-back quiet lazy mare has turned into an utter witch. She's about a month pregnant and today she bit the farrier! Hard! Needless to say, she was disciplined for it and the rest of the trim job was done with a rope loop around her muzzle. I sure hope she changes the attitude but am afraid it's stuck for the duration of the pregnancy.

Answer:
Pro'ly. The sweetest, most laid-back mare at our barn tried to stomp a cat into a potholder when with foal, and came at anyone who ventured near her stall with eyes blazing and all teeth bared. That's how we knew she was going into labor. Soon as she weans her latest baby, she goes back to being a sweetie again. This is her first foal so I was a bit shocked. My other broodmare turns into a cuddly baby when pregnant and definitely wants someone there holding her hoof when she gives birth. Is she having any problems or pain? I only asked, not being in the loop as far as prego mares with attitudes go, but a gal I spoke with had a certain mare that developed crystals in her urine and gave the mare a really bad attitude, and she watched for this and when this occured, she would give the mare apple cider vinegar in her grain about a 1/2 cup per day and it seemed to balance her ph enough to stop the crystallization in her urine. End of attitude. might be worth a check. She doesn't seem to be having any problems. The owner of the stud farm said he knew she was pregnant because she was laying her ears back and trying to bite the stallions when they were led past her stall. She just is bitchy, that's all. yeh...i know how she feels! i know how i was when i was pregnant! i was a bitch on wheels! i was totally not myself! it's just all those hormones...they make you go crazy! =) hopefully she will calm down once her body gets used to the changes!
