Nausea ?

Tagged As: Anti Nausea Medication

Question:
To those of you that have opiate induced nausea, which do you find to be the best anti-nausea medication and I'm not interested in marijuana as a anti- nausea medication.

Answer:
Ok opiates make you sick, ask your Doc about Phenergan (what I take) or Vistaril... 1 Note.. Both of these Drugs Potentiate Narcotics, so you May, May be able to cut back on the amount of narcotics you need to control you're pain.... I have chronic nausea from other sources, but one drug that I have found that works better than any of the antiemetics out on the market, i.e. Phenergan, Tigan, Compazine, etc., is Zofran. It is rather expensive, but it works so well. In fact, it does not have a sedative effect like the other antiemetics on the market. Zofran is used primarily for chemotherapy patients, but they are now finding it helps for other types of nausea as well. If you want, talk to your doctor about Zofran, and maybe he can give you a few samples to try. Compazine is the best script I have ever used for this. However, I have something that works much better for me: 1/4 c dried mint, 1 t powdered ginger, 1 qt boiling water. Pour the water over the mint and ginger, and let steep for 15 min. SIP it, hot or cold, whenever nausea strikes. Ok so the narcotics make you nauseaous... Talk to you're Doc Phenergan (What I Take) and Vistaril (hydroxizine) May help Plus as an added bonus, both of these drugs potentiate the effects of narcotics, so In some cases..... only some mind you you may be able to cut back on the amount of the pain meds you take and/or the pain relief may indeed last longer... Ask your Doc.... As for pot.... the drug companys jumped on that band wagon too Marinol made by Roxane Labs..is basically pot in a pill used to treat nausea in chemo patients... It is synthetic THC (the main active ingrediant in Marijuana). Plus just to show they (drug co's) have a sence of humor, They named the drug using the last name of Cheech Marin, a Pro Pot Comedian in the 70's & 80's You may of heard of the old Cheech & Chong Movies, Thats them.. The drug companys did not want to lose a chance to make money..they knew pot actually helped people so they dumped a few Million dollars into it and got the FDA th approve it.. I have used Atarax (hydroxyzine), Zofran, Phenergan, Antivert (meclizine, available OTC as Dramamine II), and Compazine. I am currently using Compazine as it also has a nice anti-anxiety effect as well as the antinausea function. I had Zofran for postsurgical nausea and found it basically useless :-( and Atarax (which I had also been prescribed for interstitial cystitis) gave me screaming nightmares. I also take Prilosec for stomach problems caused by years of NSAID use. I've also found that I get less nauseated the longer I take the opiates (Stadol NS and Percocet) so maybe I'm just getting used to it. The ginger ale and crackers thing never worked for me for opiate nausea since it's not in the stomach at all, it's stimulation of the emetic center of the brain (read your inserts - they're fascinating).
