Is morning sickness medicine safe?

Tagged As: Morning Sickness Medicine

Question:
Have you tried popsicles? I never threw one up! FWIW, I tried both the regular ones and the natural ones made from juice. The ones made from juice tasted very metallic to me when I had the severe morning sickness, and I did better with the supermarket brand. I really did keep these down pretty well. I gave up on the concept of eating well during that time. Since I am starting to feel better now, I will soon try to concentrate more on my diet. In the meantime, my docs and nurses all told me that the morning sickness is very very common, and that many women lose weight in the first months. In spite of that, the babies do fine. One of my docs said, Don't fight City Hall. Just eat what you can and get through it.

Answer:
I've just gotten over 2 months of severe morning sickness, to the point where I was throwing up pure bile and couldn't swallow my vitamin. The most liquid I had one day was a few oz. of Gatorade, and a whole meal was 1/4 piece of peanut butter toast. I lost 16 lbs in 2 months, and that's not IMO real good for the baby. I finally called the doctor. They had me in the office for 5 minutes to give me a vitamin B6 shot Tuesday, and today (Friday) is my second day of eating real food again. I was even worried about the cost of the shot, if my insurance doesn't cover it it's only about $20, and they said most people only need it one time. I took Diclectin for both my pregnancies - because of horrible morning sickness - with both of them I took it for two weeks - to help me gain back the weight (15 lbs) that I lost - it worked - and my kids are healthy and happy. It is, however, fairly expensive - here in Canada - a 2 week supply was $60. Ouch eh? The vitamin B shot (Pyridoxin, it's called) lasted a whole 2 days. They had me back in the following Monday, for another shot and the nurse had told me Oh, just one usually works. The girl at the check-out/appointment desk told me that people usually come back on a weekly basis for it. The OB sent me to the MD who gave me Bentyl, which I puked and gave up on. The OB wasn't crazy about my taking any prescription drugs, anyway. At this last visit, the OB said don't worry about not eating, the baby's getting everything it needs, it's just *me* who's not getting any nutrients. He even said forget the vitamins until actual food stays down on a regular basis, they're just insurance anyway. He said that I'll just have to make sure to eat only extremely healthy and nutrient-rich foods when I start eating again.
