HELP! - Very Bad Morning Sickness & Nausea?

Tagged As: Morning Sickness Nausea

Question:
Desperatley seeking help/advice for my wife's terrible case of morning sickness (3x prior to noon) and nausea (all day & night) at 7 weeks. The doctor recommended Mylanta (to reduce acidity) and Mylanta 80mg gas chewables. These do not seem to work, and the doctor will not prescribe vitamins until she is over the nausea. Is there anything stronger that she can take to curb these horrendous symptoms?

Answer:
I experience all day sickness from eight to 14 weeks. Lost about 8 pounds. My OB prescribed Phenergan (sp?) first in tablets then in suppositories. It is an anti-nausea medication. It's not specifically for pregancy and you might get other responses cautioning against *any* medication during pregnancy but I trusted my OB completely and used the medication discrimately. One side-effect is that it will make her very drowsy - which I certainly preferred to vomiting. I was grateful to sleep. I wouldn't worry too much about the vitamins yet. They sometimes contribute to nausea - that's likely why he advises against taking them now. There will be plenty of time for them to benefit her later. All I could keep down for six weeks was peanut butter toast and milk...not a healthy diet but it kept me from passing out from lack of sustenance! It's great that you're showing her such concern. Congratulations on impending parenthood! Keep supporting her and she'll make it through this ick period. My wife had all day sickness and had to be hospitalized for dehydration and ketosis when pregnant with our first child. She was just as sick last fall with our second (due 7/17). She took phenergan tablets (then suppositories) with each. The main problem is that phenergan made her so drowsy that she still couldn't drive to work. Be supportive of her, you will possibly think it is in her mind and she can work it out. It isn't. I have the black eye to prove it. Just kidding. . .one good point . . . her doctor said that although there is not much research to back it up, in his experience, rough morning sickness is a good sign of a strong pregnancy. Apparently the fetus is causing the production of hormones at a steady level. This is my second pregnancy and also the second in which I experience bad sickness around the clock. In my first pregnancy I dried out too much and developed a kidney stone and a severe infection of the kidneys which led in the end to losing the baby. This time I'm very careful to get enough liquid, which isn't always easy. I found isotonic drinks like Gatorade helpful. I had very bad all day sickness during all 3 my pregnancies, my last one was the worst. It lasted till about 18 or 20 weeks and I lost around 14 lbs or so. I never took any medication, what helped for me was drinking Gatorade, eating fresh fruit and eating raw vegetables (like carrots or broccoli). These were the few things that I could eat without having problems. I also tried to get in some other foods, but they usually did not stay down....
