Question:
Does anyone have any remedies for morning sickness. A friend of mine has violent nausea and is 5 weeks pregnant. She has it all day long. We've tried saltines and peppermint tea but nothing seems to work.
Answer:
the best remedy I have found for morning sickness is ginger. Whether in a tea or sucked as a losenge (whole) . Relieves the nausea & vertigo. It is the only thing that kept me going in the 2 hour stacking wait at the dallas airport in a terrible thunderstorm. (no I didn,t leave nailmarks in the seat handles.) Try a B vitamin complex, especially one with B6. This was many years ago, but taking double (maybe triple) the daily recommended dossage for morning sickness kept me out of the hospital for one pregnancy--I use to get so ill that even spit made me throw up. If you can find it, an excellent book is birth by Caterine Milinaire, 1974, Harmony Books, One Park Avenue, NY,NY 10016. If you don't want to go the B vitamin route, try combining herbs instead of concentrating on just one, e.g., peppermint and hops or anise and chamomile. When I was pregnant with my last two children I had violent morning sickness for about four months. It was all day everyday. My doctor suggested B group vitamins and they definitely eased the nausea a bit. The only thing I found that really worked was lying down. If you find all else fails you can try this as a last resort. The idea that large doses of B6 may cause nerve damage has been around for awhile. I think that's why it has become difficult to find it in the 500 mg potentcies that used to be available. If I recall correctly, toxic levels are in the 500-2000 mg range according to something I read a few years ago. I think that using B6 for morning sickness would be effective in much smaller doses. Also, my general understanding is to be conservative with most supplements when you're pregnent.
