Question:
Having being diagnosed with Prostatitis I have found periods of relief then flare ups. I am wondering if it is a common symptom to have urinary frequency keyed by a bowel movement? Does the bowel movement irritate the prostate? I also have found that occasionally I feel the need to both urinate and have bowel movement. On these occasions I am able to urinate but no bowel movement. Has anyone had these symptoms or know the answers?
Answer:
I know that I seem to have flare ups after a bowel movement. I also notice that every time I have a bowel movement I urinate also. Never made the connection cause I have been like this all my life (before I got cp). Ditto here too. Always pee after I poop. It's like something relaxes and lets more urine come out or something. And, yes, I've been this way all my life too, even way before my prostate problems. I suspect it's normal but you probably don't get a lot of people talking about it if they don't have problems. I have seen numerous patients with similar complaints after a bowel movement. Most of these patients were found to have a congested prostate. In some of them we have drained as much as 1 table spoonful of EPS. This is usually followed up by relief of these symptoms. Even before I came down with prostatitis, I always found I urinated frequently for the next couple of hours after a BM. It worsened with prostatitis. Here's another incidental piece of info. I have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It's not so bad most of the time, but when I was younger (In my 20's, I'm 50 now) it was very severe at times. When this occurred it was like dysentary. Sometimes my penis would really burn right after a bout of IBS. When I got protatitis a couple of years ago, the doctor pressed real hard to get some of the prostate fluid out and, guess what, the same burning. My experience is that the bowel movements can affect the prostate, and the more violent the movement, the worse your prostate might feel. Also, my bet based on some of my own problems is that constipation and the forcing associated with it also can trigger or worsen prostatitis. This is a constant enigma to me - there are nights that I'm up all night alternating defecating and urinating it's like the bowel blocks through bladder.
