My dog has been having painful bowel movements lately, but no change in diet...

Question:
For the past two days my 9 1/2 year old dog has whimpered when doing a bowel movement. The quantity appears to have been cut short.  Her diet hasn't changed. Any thoughts?

Answer:
Partial blockage or impaction, bone shard, gland infection... It's time to see the vet. Could also be a neck or back problem that causes pain when squatting. I second Matt's suggestion to see the vet. Sounds like your dog is constipated. Add some bran or other source of fiber to your dog's diet or change your dog's food to one with more fiber. Instead of fiber, which *might* suck up too much of the fluids in the intestines; you may try boiled prunes, or plain yogurt. I have an appointment to take the dog to the vet. In the meantime I have added a little mineral oil to her food. This morning she passed the normal amount in two attempts vs. the normal one attempt. The first piece was harder & darker and the second definitely softer.
